111 WEST 57TH STREET, MANHATTAN
There’s often talk of a building changing the Manhattan cityscape but, as New Yorkers know, it rarely pans out in the dramatic fashion intended. 111 West 57th Street just may be the one to break the cycle. The landmarked Steinway Hall, erected in 1925 by Warren & Wetmore–the firm that designed Grand Central Terminal–will now boast a strikingly tall residential tower courtesy of SHoP Architects. Rising high above Central Park, the 82-story building will stand 1,428 feet upon its completion in 2018. Twelve of the structure’s 58 units will be housed in the original building; all will be furnished by design firm Studio Sofield. The new addition will feature a glass curtain wall on its north side for unobstructed views of Central Park, while Steinway Hall’s neoclassical structure will be embellished at its base with music-themed sculptures by Leo Lentelli to pay respects to the scores of artistic greats who have played inside its storied walls.
