TREE HOUSE
In renovating a couple’s home in Portola Valley, architect Malcolm Davis expanded a guesthouse on the property to incorporate a sitting area and a second-floor artist’s studio, which connects to the main house with a bridge. (Tour the home)
HIGH CONTRAST
Circa Lighting fixtures line the outer perimeter of the kitchen, while lighting by Schoolhouse Electric hangs from the beadboard portion of the ceiling. Custom aggregate countertops by NovuStone top hickory cabinetry by Warner’s Cabinets in the kitchen of a Seattle home designed by architects Dennis Marsh and Mark Elster for a client in the restaurant business. CONTEMPORARY COOL

NorthStar WoodWorks supplied the doors, and Window Craft supplied the windows that line the home’s rear facade. The Adirondack chairs and ottomans from Crate & Barrel provide seating for waterfront viewing. BACK TO THE FUTURE
The resulting focal point adds drama and places the room squarely in the current decade. Playing off the sleek new fireplace, the designer found a balance between the husband’s and wife’s design sensibilities in the living room. To counter the traditional-leaning sofa and marble table–nods to the wife–she added twin metal-and-leather chairs to the mix and suspended an industrial-looking brass-trimmed light fixture above. DESIGN AT DUSK
The architect designed the home to radiate to the east, taking advantage of views and the morning sun. Landscape designer Larry Scanlon of Telluride Landscape Company aided in designing the grounds and installed the plantings, which include aspen, spruce and native grasses. (Tour the home)
PEDAL TO THE METAL
A “metal story” was born, which weaves gunmetal, brass and copper tones in varying degrees throughout the house. The theme begins at the entry, where drum-form ceiling lights, with shades in differing metals, hang both inside and outside the massive pivoting steel front door. (Tour the home)
ON VACATION
