HOUSE OF STEEL

The central living room bisects the house allowing it to encompass sightlines of the surrounding landscape. On one side, a lush grass-filled space conceived by the designer yields a painterly effect. The Taylor Metal Products standing seam roof, installed by Willamette Roofing, furthers the home’s rural vibe. (Tour the home)

DESIGN IS ALL AROUND

In the dining room, designer Andrea Schumacher gathered Parsons side chairs and a wingback host chair from C.A.I. Designs around a table from Where Wood Meets Steel. Come evening, a Paul Ferrante chandelier from John Brooks illuminates the space. The staircase features walnut treads and a stainless-steel handrail. (Tour the home)

TREE HOUSE

In renovating a couple’s home in Portola Valley, architect Malcolm Davis expanded a guesthouse on the property to incorporate a sitting area and a second-floor artist’s studio, which connects to the main house with a bridge. (Tour the home)

HIGH CONTRAST

Circa Lighting fixtures line the outer perimeter of the kitchen, while lighting by Schoolhouse Electric hangs from the beadboard portion of the ceiling. Accenting the space are cabinet pulls by Rocky Mountain Hardware, RH stools and a breakfast table by Get Back. The space includes a Kohler faucet, a Miele dishwasher and a Viking range and oven. THE GREAT OUTDOORS

A terrace positioned just off the living area offers an alfresco spot to gather. Adirondack chairs by Loll Designs, purchased from Design Within Reach, provide seating around a custom fire pit, which was made by Hunter Metal Forge & Iron Works. The house’s roof is by Class A Roofing in Incline Village, Nevada. (Tour the home)

WALK THIS WAY

The residence, which was constructed by builder Paul Niles, has a breezeway that connects the three distinct structures. Plaster walls lend a creamy texture to the buildings, which blend contemporary and agrarian aesthetics. (Tour the home)

The rugged, industrial-inspired space, replete with professional-grade appliances, is open to the dining and living areas ensuring that it’s the idea spot for cooking and entertaining. SLEEK AND CHIC

“Having the right team is crucial for a project like this. We all went back and forth about the design and worked closely together on the house,” says designer Stephanie Wohlner. (Tour the home)

CONTEMPORARY COOL

The designer combined rustic materials with a light and airy open floor plan. Mottled concrete by Calibrated Concrete Construction provides a backdrop for the staircase’s open walnut treads and blackened-steel frame fabricated by Hunter Metal Forge & Iron Works. (Tour the home)

RURAL-INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX

NorthStar WoodWorks supplied the doors, and Window Craft supplied the windows that line the home’s rear facade. The Adirondack chairs and ottomans from Crate & Barrel provide seating for waterfront viewing. Two RH sofas wearing Perennials textured linen are tucked under the covered area that can be enclosed with glass-front NanaWall doors. Barn Light Electric fixtures provide visibility at night. BACK TO THE FUTURE

The resulting focal point adds drama and places the room squarely in the current decade. Playing off the sleek new fireplace, the designer found a balance between the husband’s and wife’s design sensibilities in the living room. To counter the traditional-leaning sofa and marble table–nods to the wife–she added twin metal-and-leather chairs to the mix and suspended an industrial-looking brass-trimmed light fixture above. DESIGN AT DUSK

16 Industrial Farmhouses

The architect designed the home to radiate to the east, taking advantage of views and the morning sun. Landscape designer Larry Scanlon of Telluride Landscape Company aided in designing the grounds and installed the plantings, which include aspen, spruce and native grasses. (Tour the home)

PEDAL TO THE METAL

16 Industrial Farmhouses

A “metal story” was born, which weaves gunmetal, brass and copper tones in varying degrees throughout the house. The theme begins at the entry, where drum-form ceiling lights, with shades in differing metals, hang both inside and outside the massive pivoting steel front door. (Tour the home)

ON VACATION

16 Industrial Farmhouses

Inspired by Greek Revival farmhouses, the architect designed the main house with plenty of windows–by Marvin Windows and Doors through BMC–for the vistas and covered porches to help with cooling. (Tour the home)

SUBTLE TOUCHES

16 Industrial Farmhouses

The designer worked with the builder to update the home, including adding steel-and-glass barn doors to separate the study from the living room. The black Crawford cabinet is by Jonathan Adler, and the marble coffee table is by RH. Leather stools by Cisco Home rest on Flor carpet tiles. (Tour the home)

CONTEMPORARY COMPOUND

The homeowners’ camp-style retreat designed by architect David Shiflet comprises three separate buildings, two of which can be seen here: a main cottage and a detached sleeping building with well-planned exterior walkways. The landscaping by designer Rick Scheen features native irises and ferns, as well as wildflower areas. (Tour the home)
