Referencing the lanterns outdoors, a grand hand-forged iron chandelier by Gregorius Pineo presides over the kitchen, where Belgian Bluestone reappears, topping the counters. On the rear slope, landscape architect Erik Katzmaier brought in olive trees that, like the house, give a feeling of the French countryside. He then developed a flat area between the house and the slope as a space for entertaining, complemented by Santa Maria stone paving and an outdoor fireplace, along with citrus trees and a low-maintenance herb garden. The designer used a palette of light neutrals punctuated with textures and pattern to play up the home’s sense of openness. “It was critical that we didn’t hinder that feeling with dark furnishings and fabrics,” explains Meg Joannides, who designed the living and dining rooms–on either side of the foyer–to “coexist harmoniously.” (Tour the home)

Barley-twist chairs by Panache Designs from ID Collection tout Lee Jofa fabric backs and seat cushions wearing Holly Hunt’s Great Plains fabric. The lanterns suspended from a coffered ceiling and a pair of sconces in the kitchen are from The Urban Electric Co.; the two islands are topped with silver travertine from Alpha StoneWorks. The Ashley Norton cabinetry hardware and Waterworks faucet are from Chown Hardware, and the sink is Rohl. Ann Sacks tile on the backsplash behind the Viking range injects subtle pattern.
