A timeless palette lays the groundwork for sophisticated bath spaces where less is always more.
MODERN MARBLE
The layout of this guest bathroom in St. James’s, England, had to be carefully considered in order to retain the original fireplace, while also adding a stand-alone bathtub and shower.
“Its proximity to royalty makes this home quite unique,” says designer Katharine Pooley of the landmark residence she designed in St. James’s, England, just a short distance from Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. The historic space deserves a statement-making bathroom, so Pooley selected striking Milas Lilac book-matched marble on all vertical elements allowing for a mirror-like phenomena. Milky white Thassos marble on the floor and vanities balances the bold stone and lets the architectural fireplace take center stage.

The black-and-white color scheme in this Hancock Park, Los Angeles guest bathroom by Studio Life.Style is anything but two-toned. Instead, it packs a punch with classic Royal Stone flooring and a feminine floral Cowtan & Tout wallcovering, all tempered by the custom industrial-feeling shower door. “One of our signatures is always using black with touches of brass,” explains Shannon Wollack, founder and partner of the design firm. “Using this color on something as basic as shower doors really provides an architectural moment,” says the designer.
“The clients wanted to bring in more of the traditional aspects but they also like a lot of elements, so the goal for the space was to keep it fresh and clean while also layering. It was quite the balancing act.”
