allas-based artist Arienne Lepretre was naturally drawn to art from a young age while living abroad in Beirut with her family. Since then, it’s been an important means of expression for Lepretre, who spent the early part of her life living around the world. “I disappear into my drawings and paintings and become calm,” she explains.

With a lifetime of experience and education behind her, Lepretre is now known for her abstract abstract oil paintings, graphite on paper, dyes, watercolors and a variety of other mixed media. “They all get their time in the spotlight,” she says.

If you could get feedback on your work from anyone, who would it be and why?

While I was in grad school, I learned how valuable critiques are. If I could, I would have them on a daily basis, but I have a circle of artists and we schedule regular CRIT meetings.

Tell us about a piece that turned out differently than you expected.

I paint thematically, and do not plan my paintings. It is a good day when they cooperate with me, and I don’t have to put them in time out.

What’s one vacation you’d like to take for inspiration? Why?

China; I love Chinese ink drawings, and would love to get some great paint brushes from the source as well as see the country.

What’s the story behind the best gift you’ve ever received?

From my granddaughter, Amelie, age 5, a beautiful drawing that looked like a CY Twombly work. I think it said “DOG.”

Tell us about your all-time favorite piece in your home.

There are many mementos I love, usually something with mojo attached to it. A piece of the Berlin Wall sits among my cherished books in my library.

Which three people, dead or alive, would you invite to your dream dinner party and why?

Anyone with an intelligence, wit and humor would qualify.
