Throw all your preconceived notions about eco-friendly design out the window. Sustainable materials and building methods have come a long way since the early days of planet-conscious practices. “Since the company’s inception, we have been creating furniture that is as healthy for our customers as it is for the planet,” says founder of Cisco Home, Cisco Pinedo. “We believe that health, happiness and one’s home are inextricably linked.” The company also strives to keep production local, working with master artisans such as Conan Castillo, who creates beautifully crafted pieces from such found objects as old factory conveyor belts and vintage trunks. The Los Angeles-based Cisco Home continues to expand its footprint in the Bay Area with a brand-new store on Sacramento Street’s design row. Here, Pinedo shares his ideal day exploring San Francisco.
7 a.m. I head to the Alameda Flea Market early since this is prime time for uncovering real treasures. I have found vintage lighting, midcentury chairs and stunning textiles. The beauty of going to a flea market is that the vendors are not specific. We make pillows and upholster small chairs and ottomans with the textiles we find at Alameda–they provide new inspiration for our Cisco Prints collections.
10 a.m. Breakfast at Mama’s is my favorite. It’s on Washington Square in North Beach, and after a long morning of scouring the flea market, you can sit down for a true breakfast of champions. By that, I mean chocolate-cinnamon French toast, blueberry pancakes and eggs Benedict with prosciutto and grilled tomato.
12 p.m. I like to cover a lot of territory when I’m in San Francisco. So, I take the ferry to Sausalito, then hop over to the Marin Country Mart in Larkspur for some shopping and a light bite alfresco at Farmshop. I also always like to check out Unionmade–it has the best selection of slim-fit denim in a wide range of washes.
2 p.m. Back in the city, I enjoy perusing Sacramento Street. It has a great combination of local shops and design stores. March is well designed and has fantastic kitchen items–I love the knives and spices. The Future Perfect is housed in a striking contemporary space and features a beautifully curated collection of cool accessories. Bright on Presidio is also an amazing lighting store.
5 p.m. If I have time, I’ll fit in a hike at Muir Woods or the Marin Headlands. Both are gorgeous places to explore.
7 p.m. I’ll meet friends for dinner at Delfina–it’s the quintessential neighborhood spot. Finally, I’ll hop on the last flight back to Los Angeles!
