A Bedding Brand Put A New Spin On Its Signature Look

Details

Iconic Swedish bed manufacturer Hastens is unveiling a first-of-its-kind collection to consumers around the globe this month.

The company — which last year made headlines for its $150,000 Vividus mattress — outsourced the design of its textiles for the first time since its foundation in 1852. The brand tapped Swedish design duo Bernadotte & Kylberg to create two textiles that present a modern riff on the classic blue-checkered pattern that makes Hastens beds so recognizable.

The result is Appaloosa and Marwari — two extremely unique and cerebral reimaginations of Hastens’ iconic pattern. The names refer to horse breeds — a nod to the Hastens signature mattress stuffing: horse hair. Plus, each design offers a playful interpretation of the equine after which it’s named. (Appaloosas have irregularly spotted coats, while Marwaris have rich brown coats.)

Oscar Kylberg, president of Bernadotte & Kylberg, notes the two-year undertaking was a bit of a daunting task, but one that he and his business partner, Carl Philip Bernadotte, could not pass up.

“For us as designers, it is equally important with the two-dimensional expression in the pattern of the three-dimensional shape of the bed,” Kylberg says. “To interpret such iconic designs was challenging, but exciting, and we are very proud of the result.”

Luxe spoke with fifth-generation owner of Hastens, Jan Ryde, to better understand what this new collection means for the brand.

What made you decide to branch out from the classic checkered pattern?

Mainly because of the 40-year celebration for the blue check and the 2000T bed. Since the 2000T has been through constant developments over the years, but nothing was outward facing to the public, we decided to celebrate our iconic bed model by creating a new look. The two new designs, the Appaloosa and the Marwari, are the result of our mission as we looked to Bernadotte & Kylberg to present a reflection of our history and crafts, without compromising on comfort or design.

How did you decide to collaborate with Bernadotte & Kylberg?

We knew that the designer who would get the honor of the assignment needed to share our values and understand what we wanted to accomplish. We were familiar with Bernadotte & Kylberg and had seen what they had done in the past with other companies that have rich history and tradition. We admired their ability to see our products and give them a new and innovative look. Similar to Hasten, B & K value function before form, and they are responsive and think quality should come first. Design for them is not just something that looks beautiful, but it should reflect that the product is intended for the very smallest detail while giving a genuine look.

Tell us a bit about why sleep is important to you.

“If you sleep well, you stay well.” We spend 1/3 of our lives asleep. A person who sleeps well is a person who can perform more throughout the day. Investing in good sleep should be the No. 1 priority of all people since it is proven that a person who sleeps well in the nights runs less risk of illness and keeps a higher focus. Plus, the body at rest gets the chance to rebuild. We can call on sleep for a purification and reconstruction state. Our mission is to make the world a better place by offering people the opportunity for good sleep.
