Talking Shop With Samuel Genthner
BLACK & GOLD, SAN FRANCISCO
When did you open? Black & Gold opened its doors at 15th and Noe streets in November 2013.
What attracted you to the location? It was a corner spot with 20-foot-high ceilings on one of the most charming streets in San Francisco.
Describe the concept for the space. When I signed the lease, it was in the process of becoming a restaurant, so the renovation took nearly five months. We put in new flooring, painted, added track lighting and created a custom built-in cabinet.
On the floor: We focus on designs from the 20th century–hand-picked items that make a house a home. You’ll find luxe chandeliers and lacquered side tables next to a George Nakashima nightstand. Where do you source? I search from Palm Springs to New Jersey and just about everywhere in between. My style is eclectic–I love mixing eras to create contrast.
