The Lancaster Hotel: In 2017, Hurricane Harvey accelerated a two-year, multimillion-dollar renovation plan for The Lancaster, the only hotel in Houston’s bustling Theater District. Interior designer David Cadwallader led the Regency-inspired look, which recognized the 1926 hotel’s legacy as a Texas Historic Landmark while incorporating contemporary elements for an updated feel. The public spaces have been made airier and brighter, while an understated palette of gray, cream, taupe and white prevails in the 93 rooms and suites. Like a few other local hotels, The Lancaster also boasts a sizeable art collection but with a slight twist: The 200-plus pieces were created by contemporary artists with ties to Texas. thelancaster.com

The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston: Complete with a private helipad, a 20,000-bottle wine cellar, designer boutiques and luxury car dealerships, the new Post Oak Hotel is taking the lead in all things extravagant. Set on a 10-acre campus, the 38-story building by Gensler Architects and Abel Design Group features architectural precast concrete, bronze, glass, natural limestone, marble and granite. The hotel offers 250 amenity-filled guest rooms, each more than 500 square feet, plus 20 executive guest suites. Modern art by the likes of Frank Stella, Alex Katz and Robert Motherwell fills the hallways and the lobby, where a Swarovski crystal chandelier also gleams.
