n a hillside lot near Crystal Cove–one of California’s most picturesque state parks–a new Laguna Beach home offers a hybrid of aesthetics. While the exterior is traditional Santa Barbara style with stucco walls and a red-tile roof, the interiors boast a more cosmopolitan look, befitting the homeowner’s contemporary art collection, which includes works by Ed Moses and Nicole Landau.
With a clear vision for the project already in mind–right down to the lemon trees and white roses that surround the house–the couple hired architect Homer Oatman and designer Lisa McDennon to blend the two aesthetics.
“From the very beginning, we just shared ideas,” says McDennon. “They wanted a sleek look but with elements that brought it back to the Spanish style.”
To that end, the designer created contemporary rooms that gave equal weight to the views and the artwork, while incorporating natural materials like terra cotta and marble, as well as custom wrought-iron details, all to the delight of the homeowners.
Take a deeper look inside this new abode, which meets all the homeowners’ needs.
