Those curious to explore Atlanta’s array of architectural styles and edifices, both iconic and new, will want to strap on their walking shoes for Open House Atlanta, taking place October 19-20.
Organized by the Atlanta chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the free, self-guided architecture tour takes attendees to more than 50 landmark buildings in Downtown, Midtown, the West End and Old Fourth Ward.
The tour stops–which span genres (commercial, ecclesiastical, hospitality, civic) and styles (Beaux Arts to Gothic Revival, Brutalist to Modern)–include major highlights such as the John C. Portman-designed Peachtree Center, The Ponce Condominium, Big Bethel AME Church and Federal Reserve Bank. Several sites — such as the Hurt Building, a flatiron predating the one in New York City that also was one of the first skyscrapers to rise in the Southeast — are even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Stops such as Portman Architects will offer special programming–such as a virtual reality station and film screenings–to accompany the tour. The shared offices of AIA Atlanta and AIA Georgia (located at 50 Hurt Plaza Suite 109) also will remain open over the weekend.
Not all tour locations are open both days, so check ohatl.org/sites for scheduling specifics. Visit ohatl.org/reservations for tickets.
