GOT THE BLUES

PianoRoomTREND1

A seating vignette with a custom ottoman from Cisneros Custom Furniture, covered in blue velvet by Jab Anstoetz, creates a comfortable spot to listen to the music of the walnut baby grand piano by Steinway. (Tour the home)

MEDIEVAL CHIC

PianoRoomTREND2

Black and gold tones abound the great room with pieces such as the antique Wm. Knabe & Co. piano, a wing chair from Fritz & Hollander and the 1960s ram’s- head chairs from Fairfield County Antique & Design Center in Norwalk, Connecticut. The coffee table from Blackman Cruz in Los Angeles and the Keleen Leathers hair-on-hide rug from Terris Draheim also play into the black-and-gold scheme. (Tour the home)

UPSCALE

PianoRoomTREND3

In the entry of a West Linn home, revamped by builders Brian Bohrer and Jeff Bohrer and designer Joelle C. Nesen, the team replaced the black-and-white marble flooring with blue-gray stone tile from Ann Sacks. The collection of artwork includes vintage and contemporary pieces making for a salon-like feel. Accenting the space are Avrett sconces and a Christopher Spitzmiller lamp. (Tour the home)

IN HARMONY

PianoRoomTREND4

A flagstone wall grounds the great room, where interior designer David Michael Miller used Troscan console tables to separate the music room from a formal seating area. A Holly Hunt Studio sofa covered in Christopher Hyland fabric sits hearthside. (Tour the home)

VISIONARY

PianoRoomTREND5

Commanding contemporary artwork found throughout this Cherry Hills Village house, including a Gavin Rain piece in the living room, adds a final layer. Though the owner already had a significant collection, near the completion of the house, he made a trip to Art Basel in Miami Beach and came back with new pieces. Art is an important focus in the home. (Tour the home)

OH SO GRAND

PianoRoomTREND6

Drama reigns in the formal living room, where an heirloom baby grand piano resting on an Organic Looms carpet is the star. The custom high-back banquette is upholstered in velvet from Robert Allen, while the piano bench features leather fringe from Bradley. A hand chair from Noir adds a sculptural element. FROM THE TOP

PianoRoomTREND8

An A. Rudin settee upholstered in a Holland & Sherry wool-flannel provides seating for family music recitals in the parlor of a Wicker Park residence. Also the site of game nights, the space includes an antique Victorian chess table from London’s Thomas Crabb Antiques for friendly competitions. The armchair by Vincere, Ltd. wears Great Plains fabric by Holly Hunt, and the wool-and-linen rug with a leather border is by JD Staron. (Tour the home)

CRESCENDO

PianoRoomTREND9

The Kadir glass-and-mirror table by Cattelan Italia reflects the canted window wall in the living room designed by residential designer John Lasry. Interior designer Debbie Flicki deliberately mismatched a quartet of Bohème armchairs by Cierre Imbottiti–one set is clad in white leather, while the other is in a taupe heavy linen; the minimal boxy leather Millau sofa is by Bonaldo. An antique piano purchased in Germany and a 50-year-old wooden chest, studded with clavos, from the husband’s native Peru add warmth. (Tour the home)

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

PianoRoomTREND10

In one corner of this living room hangs an 18th-century gouache-on-silk artwork from The Chinese Porcelain Company in New York. Draperies made using a Trend textile provide the perfect backdrop for the inherited piano illuminated by a Vaughan floor lamp. (Tour the home)

VELVETY SMOOTH

PianoRoomTREND11

The living room palette complements the azul waters outside–from the owners’ vintage rug and marble coffee table (with a new base conceived by Brown and Davis) to a custom sofa also by the designers in a pale gray crushed velvet by Pierre Frey, flanked by vintage drum tables from Craig Van Den Brulle. The Steinway & Sons piano, a family heirloom, was relacquered in a high-gloss black. (Tour the home)

IN YOUR CORNER

PianoRoomTREND12

Inside, designer Wilson removed numerous walls to create one main living space on the top floor, where the kitchen, living, dining and family rooms overlap. Wilson added a succession of large windows and glass doors oriented toward the back. “You can open an 18-foot sliding-glass door, and the pool deck is a half-level down,” he explains. (Tour the home)

OPEN COMPOSITION

PianoRoomTREND13

In the sun room, interior designer Garrigues kept furnishings sparse to ensure the room remained a versatile entertaining space. Along one wall a painting by Moshe Rosenthalis hangs over a settee from Lee Industries, upholstered in Henry Calvin fabric from Donghia. An embroidered Manuel Canovas textile on the pillows, and an antique hand-carved elephant table (circa 1880 from Randall Tysinger Antiques in High Point, North Carolina) provide the Eastern accents. (Tour the home)

DESIGN MELODY

PianoRoomTREND14

In the serene sand-and-shell-hued living room, silk area rugs add warmth to the floors, linen curtain panels subtly frame expansive window-walls and delicate sheers filter sunlight as needed. “The living room is a large rectangular space, so I broke it up by creating two separate sitting areas,” the designer says. “The immediate family uses the more casual one centered around the fireplace. The other, which is slightly more formal, works well when they host social events.” (Tour the home)

BAROQUE

PianoRoomTREND15

A distinctive piano anchors a gallery wall in the great room’s bar area, where the Lee Jofa print makes another appearance on the card table chairs and nearby throw pillows. The fabric’s greens and yellows are emphasized in the surrounding furniture’s upholstery. Artwork was acquired throughout the years. (Tour the home)

FINE-TUNED

PianoRoomTREND16

The light-filled living room of this Lake Forest home features a Holly Hunt sofa and a pair of chairs by Dessin Fournir swathed in Raoul Textiles fabric. (Tour the home)

DRESSED UP

PianoRoomTREND17

Serving as a focal point in the entrance hall is a curved staircase–featuring handrails from Artistic Stairs, spindles from Creative Metals and decorative accents by Phoenix Molding. A chandelier conceived by interior designer April Lozevski and fabricated by Hinkley’s Lighting Factory shines light over the owners’ baby grand piano and an Oushak carpet from Azadi Fine Rugs. The wood flooring is from Bradford’s Fine Floors. (Tour the home)

NEW COMPOSITION

PianoRoomTREND18

In the music room, a quartet of chairs offers a comfy place for reading or taking in classical tunes played on the Steinway piano. A vibrant artwork that reflects the family’s Latin heritage adds a punch of color to the neutral walls. (Tour the home)
