Chicago-based landscape architecture firm Hoerr Schaudt is raising the roof–quite literally–in downtown Houston.

As part of OMA partner Jason Long’s transformation of the historic Barbara Jordan Post Office into the mixed-use complex, POST Houston, Hoerr Schaudt will design the site’s 5-acre rooftop park and sustainable organic farm. The outdoor concept is set to be one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Dubbed Skylawn, the rooftop will comprise a total of 210,000 square feet, with 120,000 square feet set aside for gardens and 50,000 square feet dedicated to the farm. Ingredients will be available to culinary tenants of the space, which will accommodate multiple dining and event venues, recreation and open areas, as well as a stage for events. While relishing in (rooftop) farm-to-table dining, guests will be able to enjoy 360-degree views of Houston’s downtown skyline.

The rooftop will be accessible via three monumental stairways leading from the retail, office and food hall atriums. Long’s plans for the building, developed by Lovett Commercial and set for completion in summer 2020, also include site-specific art installations by acclaimed artists and other retail and office concepts including restaurants, bars, an international market hall and flexible coworking space.
