here’s something about a panoramic vista that puts things into perspective. That feeling is familiar for the young couple who decided to build their dream home on a spectacular property overlooking a canyon in Del Mar, California.
“They wanted it to be a great home for family and friends,” explains interior designer, Helene Ziman, “livable and trendy with organic warmth.”
In the courtyard, porcelain pavers surrounded by beds of stones point directly toward the south-facing canyon views along the back of the house. Inside, white oak flooring and a matching ceiling contribute to an array of textures. “There are these layers and undulating forms working together,” Ziman explains.
Within the layering of materials, however, there is repetition. The Zebrano wood, for example, has been used on the living room fireplace as well as for the custom cabinets in the kitchen and master bedroom. “Repeating the wood throughout the house creates continuity and harmony,” Ziman explains. “It’s so important to edit the space, so that one doesn’t speak louder than the other.”
According to architect, Bill Hayer, the house functions just as well as it looks. “I just love the way this house flows and the way it lives,” Hayer explains. “I’ve been to parties there, and it’s very comfortable.”
