Check In: The Whitby

Famed hoteliers Tim and Kit Kemp are at it again. Their second Firmdale Hotels property in New York City, The Whitby hotel takes over a space in Midtown, just two blocks from Central Park. The 16-story structure was designed by Stonehill & Taylor and evokes an industrial tone with warehouse-style windows and a limestone facade. Inside are the signature decor elements Firmdale is known for: cheery pops of color, layered prints and textures and an enviable selection of art. There’s also a library collection, a movie theater that holds 130 leather seats and a lounge with a 30-foot-long pewter bar that provides a proper afternoon tea service. As with the company’s 11 other hotels, each of The Whitby’s 86 guest rooms features its own color scheme. But the best room in the house has to be the two-bedroom Whitby Suite, an 1,845-square-foot penthouse loft with stunning Manhattan views via two terraces.
